What to Expect on a Small Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

Royal Caribbean International is well known for its massive, innovative ships filled with state-of-the-art exciting attractions, from bionic bartenders and surfing simulators to ice rinks, rock climbing walls, open structure promenades, towering slides, zip lines, bumper cars, and so much more. But while the biggest ships dominate headlines, brochures, and commercials with all their glitz and glamor, what should passengers expect on smaller ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet?

Defining Big and Small

Big and small are relative distinctions when it comes to comparing cruise ships, and an individual ship’s gross tonnage does not necessarily mean it will feel “big” or “small” onboard. Considering passenger capacity is another way to determine the size of a cruise ship, and in general, ships that accommodate greater numbers of passengers are larger and more elaborate than ships with smaller passenger manifests.

Whether you consider gross tonnage, passenger capacity, overall length, or several other metrics, however, at least four of the 10 largest cruise ships in the world are Royal Caribbean ships, and even larger ships are already on order or under construction for the fleet. Yet not all Royal Caribbean ships are massive behemoths, and their smaller vessels include:

  • Empress of the Seas – 48,563 gross tons, 1,840 passenger capacity
  • Majesty of the Seas – 74,007 gross tons, 2,350 passenger capacity
  • Vision-class ships (Grandeur of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas, and Vision of the Seas) – 73,800-82,900 gross tons, 2,400-2,700 passenger capacities
  • Radiance-class ships (Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, and Jewel of the Seas) – 90,090 gross tons, 2,100 passenger capacities

Compare those smaller ships to the largest of the Royal Caribbean fleet, the Oasis-class ships – Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, and Symphony of the Seas – which each boast 225,282-228,081 gross tons and can serve 6,360-6,687 passengers at full capacity – and it’s easy to tell which ships are biggest and smallest.

Sailing on a Small Royal Caribbean Ship

It is no surprise that the largest ships in any cruise ship fleet, including Royal Caribbean, are home to the newest, most innovative features and have a greater number of dining options, entertainment venues, and activity choices. That does not mean, however, that smaller ships are at all lacking or deliver a less enjoyable cruise vacation experience.

While a smaller Royal Caribbean ship may initially be disappointing if a guest has been enthralled with advertisements and is expecting all the bells and whistles of the latest media commercials, even the smallest ships in the fleet offer plenty of fun, relaxation, and enjoyment.

Food and Drink

All the Royal Caribbean International ships, from its smallest to largest, are home an array of dining options including the diverse Windjammer Marketplace buffet, the full-service main dining rooms, and an extensive room service menu.

The more luxurious Chops Grille steakhouse is also featured on most of the smaller Royal Caribbean ships, and more casual options such as Sorrento’s pizzeria, coffee bars, and soft-serve ice cream are also widely available. Different bars featuring specialty drinks and exclusive wine lists are also found across the fleet, regardless of ship size, allowing all passenger to raise a glass and make a toast to a fabulous cruise.

The size of the ship does not impact the quality of the entertainment on Royal Caribbean cruises, and each ship features a live house band or show orchestra to provide exquisite musical accompaniment to shows and premiere performances.

Live DJs also spin tunes for dance parties and smaller venues, including energetic, interactive game shows such as the line’s insanely popular Crazy Quest. Other onboard activities on each ship, large or small, include themed trivia contests, dance lessons, informative lectures, movies, and more.

The Vitality Spa is a feature of all Royal Caribbean ships, and while smaller ships may have fewer treatment rooms and appointment availabilities, they still offer world-class pampering options for every passenger.

Different types and lengths of massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, hair styling, acupuncture treatments, and medi-spa options such as Ionithermie wraps, smile-whitening, and more are available onboard. Each ship also has a fitness center offering the latest aerobic equipment, weight machines, and different fitness and wellness classes.

While smaller Royal Caribbean ships may not have every feature of the larger vessels, each ship does have at least some of the amazing options available for passengers to enjoy. Even the smallest ships in the fleet have pools and multiple whirlpools, as well as children’s play areas.

Casinos, arcades, karaoke bars, and rock climbing walls are present on all Royal Caribbean ships, and passengers can also find more casual onboard fun such as ping pong tables, shuffleboard courts, and quiet spaces like libraries and card rooms to explore and enjoy.

Ship size has no impact on the quality of service to be found across the Royal Caribbean fleet, and all staff members – bartenders, stewards, wait staff, chefs, hostesses, entertainers, etc. – are trained to exacting standards to provide superior service for all guests on all ships.

Guest services staff members are on hand 24/7 to address any problems or concerns, and security staff members are available in case of disturbances. In fact, many cruise staff members on smaller ships pride themselves on providing the best service of all, knowing that their ships may not always make the best impression on passengers, but their service can turn any cruise into an outstanding experience.

The smallest Royal Caribbean cruise ships still sail to some of the largest, most popular destinations throughout the world with voyages ranging from 3-15 nights. Depending on the ship and season, smaller ships can be found at such amazing ports as the Bahamas, Cozumel, Key West, St. Lucia, Costa Maya, Belize, Honduras, Panama, Grand Cayman, St. Thomas, Bermuda, Barbados, New England, Canada, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Turkey.

The fleet’s smaller vessels also regularly call at Cococay, the cruise line’s private island in the Bahamas, featuring an amazing water park, beautiful beaches, and amazing one-of-a-kind attractions exclusively for Royal Caribbean passengers to enjoy.

Should You Sail on a Large or Small Ship?

Ultimately, sailing on a large or small ship is a personal preference every cruise traveler should explore. Royal Caribbean International offers amazing options on ships of every size, and while larger ships may be more bustling with exotic features, smaller ships often offer a more intimate, cozy experience that still excels as a relaxing and memorable cruise vacation.

Top Cruise Trends for 2020

2020 is expected to be an exciting year for cruisers. They are seeking far-flung, pristine destinations this year, driven by a desire for immersion in each location, according to global luxury travel network Virtuoso.

The network is revealing its top cruise trends for the year in time for “wave season,” occurring January through March, when savvy travelers book voyages to benefit from special incentives. Virtuoso’s cruise portfolio includes 33 ocean, river, yacht and expedition partners offering thousands of itineraries to global ports-of-call.

Virtuoso’s top cruise trends for 2020 follow:

Distant Destinations

According to a Virtuoso-YouGov survey, the number-one reason travelers are interested in cruises is the ability to visit multiple destinations. No longer just focused on the Caribbean or Mediterranean, cruise ships visit ports as diverse as Muscat, Oman; Manta, Ecuador; and Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.

Sponsored Links

In fact, bookings for Silversea’s first Expedition World Cruise in 2021 are outpacing those for its classic World Cruise. The expedition cruise is visiting unusual ports including Rabaul, Papua New Guinea; Ksamil, Albania; and Bawemataluwo, Indonesia.

In-Port Immersion

Cruise lines are creating new itineraries and shore excursions to provide more destination immersion. Azamara offers three ways to further that connection with a locale: late-night and overnight stays, complimentary evening performances in port and shore excursions that encourage deeper connections with local people and cultures. Seabourn also offers cultural, culinary, adventure and mindful-living experiences during shore excursions, bringing the destination to life for passengers.

Cold is Hot

Lines as varied as Crystal, Seabourn, Viking and Ponant are offering more expedition cruises as the boom in adventurous cruising continues building. Passengers seeking pure, scenic destinations are attracted to chilly locales such as Antarctica, the Arctic, Greenland and Norway’s fjords.

Cruise lines are also providing more once-in-a-lifetime experiences on these voyages. Silversea offers a private-jet trip so passengers can stand next to the South Pole marker, and Quark Expeditions will feature heli-skiing in Antarctica in 2021.

Conscious Travel

Cruise lines are responding to consumers’ growing awareness of sustainability by implementing more environmentally friendly technology and programs to boost the destinations they visit, both economically and culturally. Hurtigruten, Lindblad Expeditions, Aqua Expeditions and Royal Caribbean International are among those leading the way.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association, by 2030, the cruise industry has committed to reducing its fleet-wide rate of CO² emissions by 40 percent. As well, the economic impact on the communities that cruise ships visit is enormous, sustaining 1.1 million jobs equaling U.S. $45.6 billion in wages.

Micro-trips – short jaunts for people with more money and desire to travel than time – are trending in the cruise world. Lines such as Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity and Virgin Voyages offer two- to five-night Caribbean cruises. Equally convenient, passengers have multiple options for their port of departure, with Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, New Orleans and Galveston, TX all offering micro-cruises.

While many cruisers pursue adventures in far-off lands, others are choosing itineraries closer to home. Cruise lines featuring U.S. sailings are flourishing, with American Queen’s Mississippi River cruises in particularly high demand.

The appeal extends beyond Americans, as Australians who want to cruise the legendary river are also booking voyages. Another trending U.S. river is the Pacific Northwest’s Columbia, with cruises offered by American Queen and UnCruise.

The Suite Life

Some cruise devotees only travel in style by booking a suite, and if the category they desire is not available, they push their sailing date further into the future. Suite inventory is relatively small, specifically for spacious owner’s and penthouse suites, so this demand has inspired lines to open itineraries well in advance, especially for world cruises. With 2020 bookings strong, cruisers are bumping sailing dates out as far as 2022.

Travelers who want to take advantage of wave season and book through a Virtuoso advisor will receive complimentary amenities on select sailings. The Virtuoso Voyages program, celebrating 30 years in 2020, offers exclusives ranging in value from $800 per couple to several thousand dollars on more than 650 hosted sailings each year.

Living On A Cruise Ship Is Catching On

Living On A Cruise Ship Is Catching On

Well, living on a Cruise Ship is catching on.

Quite a few couples are now subscribing to world cruises and it is affecting the Cruise Ship industry.

In 2006 the Holland America Line is experiencing a 20 percent increase in the number of cruises longer than 12 days.

For 2007, the demand for world cruises for Cunard is so great the company is having two world cruises, including the Queen Mary 2’s first voyage around the world, an 80-day journey.
Silversea Cruises, a very, very exclusive Cruise Line has just launched a series of voyages of 34 to 123 days and is having its first around-the-world cruise in 2007.

And Crystal Cruises Inc. spokeswoman Mimi Weisband said that they saw a record number of bookings for this year’s 106-day world cruise.

Why is this happening?
Nobody likes flying anymore. It is not relaxing, you are stuffed like sardines in a tin can, you have to bring your own lunch, and have to take off your shoes.

Now think about cruising.
You’ve got your house with you, wherever you go, just like a turtle.
You get taken care of, whatever you need. Medical Care is close by, so are 10 bars and 4 restaurants open 24 hours a day in most cases.

You don’t have to pack and unpack every day as with regular vacations, you can spend leisurely days playing pingpong and shuffleboard and relaxing with longtime friends.
The key selling theme for these long cruises is COMFORT.

You can see and do exotic things from 10 AM to 12 PM, go for lunch, and do more exotic things from 2 PM till 7 PM and then have a 10 course supper.
After supper there is a free show every night.

Perfect life
Rather than sitting in a summer cottage staring at the walls, on a cruise you have your social life built in, with 2000 possible friends.

Cruise lines say another key attraction is that now you can visit plenty of far-flung destinations – such as Hawaii and Tahiti- without dealing with airport security and other hassles.
The funny thing is that these Cruises are no longer exclusively populated by retired Seniors, but are becoming populated by entrepreneurial 40- and 50-people, who can turn the ship into a virtual, floating office.

You can successfully run a business from being on a ship, because of Wireless Internet Access worldwide available on these Cruise Ships.

Destinations are also being changed by the Cruise Ship industry; more and more exotic itineraries are being visited, because people like change, and if you have never seen the Pyramids, now is your chance on a 12 day Cruise.

The costs of a world cruise are no longer prohibitive, in 2005 a 100 day cruise could be had for $16,000 per person, that is $160 a day for travel, food, guided tours, shows and companionship.

Some people do this in their 30’s, saying that they want to enjoy this while they can.
Others do this after they get a divorce, as a consolation prize to themselves.

As the demand for World Cruises increases, at some point in time entrepreneurs are going to buy a Cruise Ship at a reasonable price and are going to turn it into Condominiums.

Sail to Different Destinations with Princess Cruises’ Fleet

Sail to Different Destinations with Princess Cruises’ Fleet

Do you remember the Island Princess and Pacific Princess? These are cruise ships featured in the hit television series The Love Boat, which is shown from 1977 until 1986.

The passengers and crew had a romantic and funny adventure inside the ship with luxurious and pleasurable amenities.

However, if you think that these ships are merely props on the series, it is not. These two cruise ships are formerly owned by the Princess Cruises, an American cruise line. With so many major lines in cruise industry, Princess Cruises distinguishes itself by sailing more worldwide cruise destinations.

It is History

Princess Cruises started its cruise operation in the middle of 1960’s when Stanley MacDonald rented Princess Patricia which is a ferry owned by the Canadian Pacific Limited for cruises from Los Angeles.

However, Princess Pat was never designed to withstand tropical cruising conditions. Her charter ended in favor of the cruise ship Italia.

Italia had been one of the first cruise ships to have modern design elements like lifeboats mounted lower on the ship. It allows the ship engine to be installed far in the rear, creating a spacious public room.

However, after its launching, its builders and owners declared bankruptcy. Italia was passed to a bank and consequently acquired by the Princess.

Princess renamed Italia as Princess Italia and used her for Alaskan cruises from San Francisco. However, in 1973, the chartered was canceled, and it returned to Europe to charter cruise destinations of Costa Cruise Line.

Their third charter cruise ship is the Costa’s Carla. It was purchased in the late 1960’s immediately after rebuilding. It was chartered to Princess, and later renamed as Princess Carla.

Princess Carla together with the Sun Princess acquired by the Princess from the Norwegian Cruise Lines is included in some of the scenes of the television series Love Boat.

In 1974, the acquisition of the Sea Venture and the Island Venture from Flagship Cruises, which later on became Pacific Princess and Island Princess, bolstered Princess’ fleet of ships.

The seventh ship acquired by the Princess is the Kungsholm, a former Swedish transatlantic liner owned by Flagship Cruises. It was restyled and rebuilt in Bremen by their engineers and ship designers and renamed it as the Sea Princess.

Its eight ship, the Royal Princess, was the first purpose-built cruise ship. Its release in 1984 made it one of the first British passenger ships to completely dispense with interior cabins.

Princess also acquired Sitmar Line in 1988, transferring all its ships to the Princess fleet. The Crown Princess and Regal Princess entered the cruise service in 1990, completes the Princess’ fleet of ten deluxe cruise ships.

Princess, as mentioned earlier, had distinguished itself from other lines by cruising through popular destinations such as Alaska, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico, and the Panama Canal.

It proves itself a provider of the best cruise package possible for a reasonable price. They are trying to give their customers the luxury of a cruise travel without costing a leg or an arm.

Princess’ fleet of ships offers different amenities such as dance classes, sporting activities, spa treatment centers, evening entertainments, and plenty of stuffs to do on-board.

There is no reason for you to be bored. You will be getting busy with different activities and at the same time enjoying it. They also offer traditional and modern dining, which means you can now eat your favorite food anywhere and anytime you want.

Princess Cruises in the Caribbean

If you prefer cruising through the Caribbean, they also provide different choices. There are three options, to be exact. These options are the Eastern Caribbean, the Southern Caribbean, and the Western Caribbean.

Some of the places you can visit while your cruise ship is dock on the pier are Charlotte Amalie and St. Maarten. You can also visit other parts of the Caribbean through the ports of call where you will be going.

Some things that you can do while on the Caribbean are snorkeling and diving, taking a drive, and fishing. It is a perfect place where you can do lot of things or nothing at all.

Princess Cruises will schedule shore excursions or you may opt to explore the place on your own.

There are more reasons why you need to go on-board with the Princess Cruises. Try it and experience memorable cruising.

Are you becoming increasingly bored by work?
Do you think that your life has suddenly turned quite dull and dim?

Well, well, well, if you have never been on a cruise travel before then you might just be looking for this kind of adventure. If you think your life is turning a little bit dull, brighten it up by going on a cruise travel in one of the well-known cruise lines.

Have we perked up your curiosity already? Then, give cruising a try and you are in for a treat! Here is what you can do to add more spice and adventure to your life.

Being in a cruise line as a travel passenger is a totally great and unique experience. You have to be aware of certain things in cruising, though in order to get the most out of the experience.

Cruise lines enable you to travel in a cruise ship, which will run on a specific course depending on the number of days or the package you have paid for. There are seasonally run cruise trips and there are year round trips, too.

You will also have to decide what particular theme of a cruise ship you will embark with. Usually, your choice will depend on the offerings and packages of the cruise lines. If your option is to go freestyle, as a getaway from your job’s boring routine and the overall monotonous pattern of your life, then the Norwegian Cruise Lines may just be the cruise line to perk up your life, like never before.

If you are not familiar with it yet, the Norwegian Cruise Line is a premier cruise line, with ten large and modern ships in its fleet. The Norwegian Star is its most luxurious ship that makes seasonal alternate on trips to Alaska during the summer season and to the Mexican Riviera during winter season.

The Norwegian Cruise Line has recently introduced its cruise feature of free-style dining. Historically, from cruise’s usual features, shipboard dining are structured affairs conducted by having meals served at preset hours. There are also assigned seating in the dining room with a dress code.

Norwegian Cruise Lines made the bold step of breaking free from this structured setting. Their free-style dining feature matches the contemporary American dining lifestyle.

The passengers can decide where they want to dine. They can choose from eight to a dozen dining areas on board. They can also eat what they wish.

There are dining areas that serve cafeteria-style. As we all know cafeteria-style is when food is already prepared. The jean-clad passengers can just take a tray, take the food items they like and sit down casually for the meal, or go elsewhere for it.

Meanwhile there are also main dining areas for people who like to be served with menu-based meals and full service wait of staff. Jeans, shorts, and other casual dresses are then prohibited during the course of the evening meal.

Although you will take the option of whatever you like, you are assured of getting your money’s worth. The quality and presentation of all food items in the Norwegian Cruise Line Freestyle Dining tops even its own reputation for well-prepared meals and excellent service.

If you would like to stuff yourself, full with sumptuous meals, and gain weight during the cruise travel, they you will get what you hope for! At most, you may gain seven pounds on just a weeklong Freestyle Dining cruise!

The Norwegian Cruise Line also has specialty restaurants on every ship they operate. The meals in these restaurants will not rip you off, too. They offer quality meals at additional cost.

If you prefer Asian, French, Japanese or Italian cuisine, you will be satisfied because even the furnishings of these restaurants are suitably decorated according to their theme.

Norwegian Cruise Lines food offerings in all their dining rooms and cafeteria are already included in the price of the cruise.

Although it is understood that the food service is one of the major attractions on any cruise travel, Norwegian Cruise Line also has very different cruise features for many adventurous cruise travelers.

They have a full range of on-board activities 24 hours a day. For those who are interested in staying in shape during their vacation cruise, there are fitness centers on board.

There is also the pool area, a source of live entertainment, bars, and lounge and disco areas. Even the cruise’s theater entertainment is also in the overall cruise price.

Every day of your cruise travel will be a revelation and a series of pleasure and excitement when you are on board the Norwegian Cruise Lines’ ship. You can check it out online for more information.

Important Cruise Decisions: The Details You Need To Know In Choosing a Stateroom

Not all staterooms are created equally. This is a fact that becomes all too painful if you happen to choose the wrong room for your cruise vacation. I’ve heard horror stories of sleepless nights filled with the endless droning of the ship’s engines, of claustrophobic cabins scarcely the size of a walk-in closet, and of vacationers having to go up two or three decks before they could tell if it was day or night. On the other hand, there are stories of unbelievable luxury, of sitting idly on a private verandah watching the sun set while sipping wine, and of spacious suites decorated to lavish perfection.

Believe it or not, these two scenarios, and everything in between, happen on every cruise ship on each and every voyage. This is why cabin selection is one of the most, if not the very most, important decisions that you can make before taking your cruise. And with more than 20 different types of staterooms available on a single cruise ship, choosing the right room is no easy chore.

Understand you are going to love the cruise ship itself. There will be many spacious areas on the ship and on the deck and there will be so much to do on the ship and on the different shore excursions that you can actually only use your room to sleep! The cruise industry is not expanding and building ships at the great rate they are because people are not enjoying their cruise. On the contrary, people love cruises and there are many reasons why. I just want you to understand what the staterooms are really like so you are not surprised in a negative fashion and so you can make an informed decision to make your cruise the best possible dream vacation it can be for you.

The number one factor that most people consider before choosing a stateroom is price. The price that you pay for booking a stateroom is dependent on many factors including the size of the room, the room’s layout, and the location of the room on the ship. The ship itself can even play a role in how much a stateroom costs. This is because luxury liners are normally crafted with larger rooms and more built-in luxuries. In fact, the smallest stateroom available on a luxury liner might be much larger than a room on a mainstream cruise liner. Rooms on a luxury liner also almost always come with an ocean view or balcony.
Types of Cruise Ships.

While many new cruise liners have inside staterooms of comparable size no matter which type of vessel you choose, the ship type plays an important role if you book passage on an older ship. Keep in mind that a larger ship usually has larger rooms and more amenities, but don’t take this for granted without checking it out first or you could get a surprise. Here is a brief overview of popular cruise lines and the types of ships that they use:

1. Large Ships – Carnival Cruise Lines; Celebrity Cruises; Norwegian Cruise Line; Princess Cruises; and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line.

2. Mid-size Ships – Crystal Cruises; Holland America Line; and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

3. Small Ships – Hapag-Lloyd Cruise Line and Silversea Cruises.
Types of Staterooms

Once you have chosen the type of ship that you wish to book passage on, you will need to decide what type of room would be best suited to your voyage. This will no doubt be decided by a variety of factors including your budget, the length of your cruise, and your personal preferences.

To help you decide, here is a list of the four major types of staterooms and a description of each:

1. Standard Inside Staterooms (no window or porthole) – These are the least expensive of all staterooms and are, therefore, the smallest. These rooms normally are only about 120 to 180 square feet, but are usually tastefully decorated. Gone are the bunk beds of yesteryear. Today, most inside staterooms are furnished with two twin beds that can be pushed together for a couple. While the sleeping situation has improved, the bathroom in an inside stateroom is still excruciatingly small. There is no tub, only a shower, and a noisy vacuum toilet like that on an airplane. A sink and a few shelves finish off this small, but functional space. The rest of the stateroom is decorated in much the same way as a hotel room with wall to wall carpeting, individually controlled heat and air conditioning, TV, telephone, dresser, and a reading chair.

2. Standard Outside Staterooms (with porthole or window) – These rooms are virtually identical to inside staterooms with one small exception: the window or porthole. Modern ships normally have large picture windows instead of a porthole but some modern ships still offer rooms with portholes on lower decks. These are less expensive than the rooms with windows but don’t offer much of a view. Some portholes are even partially submerged under the waterline or blocked by lifeboats.

3. Staterooms with Balconies or Verandahs – These staterooms are larger than the standard stateroom and come complete with an outside space. Although small, this extra space gives you the opportunity to see the ocean at all times from every angle in your room. And when you bore of sitting inside your cabin, you can open your door to a fresh breeze or step out on the balcony to absorb the view. Many of these staterooms even have a separate sitting area furnished with a convertible sofa which supplies extra sleeping space.

4. Suites – Suites are balconied cabins that feature separate sleeping and sitting areas. These are the largest rooms that you can book on a cruise ship. Many even have large bathrooms which are completed with a tub. While these are the most expensive rooms aboard a cruise ship, the price may well be worth it if you plan on spending numerous days at sea or a good deal of time relaxing in your room.

Another consideration that you need to make before booking a stateroom on a cruise ship is location. The location of your stateroom not only affects price but also affects the entire cruise experience. A stateroom too close to the engines can be noisy, and a stateroom on the lowest levels can make you feel like you are entombed and not part of the festivities on the upper decks. On the other hand, if you plan on spending little time in your room, these sacrifices might be well worth the money that you save. Now you know, so off you go!
